2018 is rightly called the year of ICO. Indeed, a huge number of blockchain projects can be counted this year. But how can you distinguish your idea from such a multitude? How to attract an audience and get investments?
In the world of cryptocurrencies, this task is solved by holding events such as bounty and airdrop. In our article today we will talk about the latter.
What is airdrop: types and tasks
Airdrop of cryptocurrencies is a free distribution of a small number of coins by the creators of the project, which is usually carried out at the ICO stage or a few weeks before its launch. At the same time, airdrop participants must complete some simple tasks to get their reward, for example, make a repost in social networks, like or subscribe to a Telegram channel.
There are two main types of airdrops:
- Automatic;
- Stimulating.
They differ in the procedure of conducting and the conditions that the participants must fulfill.
Automatic
This type of airdrop is an excellent tool for forming a community of a new cryptocurrency, which appeared as a result of the hard fork. At the same time, nothing is required from the participants at all - it is enough just to be the holder of a certain cryptocurrency (usually the one on the basis of which the hard fork was carried out). Newly created coins are credited in proportion to the number of coins that the participant has. Sometimes you can meet another condition - you need to be the holder of a certain number of coins.
Very often, in order to participate in airdrop, you need to have a cryptocurrency that has nothing to do with the newly created coin, but has, for example, a similar technology. So, today most ICOs are held on the Ethereum blockchain, so some blockchain companies call the need to be a holder of a certain amount of Ethereum (ETH) as a condition for participating in airdrop.

Stimulating
This is the kind of airdrop in which anyone can take part. To do this, participants must perform a number of simple actions, for which they will receive their portion of cryptocurrency. The tasks are not anything complicated, usually they are:
- Likes and reposts;
- Commenting on thematic entries;
- Communication on thematic forums;
- Subscribe to the Telegram channel;
- Joining groups in social networks;
- Providing personal data, for example, email.
Thus, a mutually beneficial exchange is obtained: the company receives free advertising and promotion, and users receive free cryptocurrency. Although, in fact, companies receive much more benefits from airdrops, since advertising services are expensive, and with the help of stimulating users with cryptocurrency (which so far costs nothing), you can provide yourself with free promotion.
Airdrop performs several tasks at once:
- Conducting free "viral marketing" - advertising is the basis of the business of the XXI century (and the ICO sphere is now a full-fledged type of business), therefore, by making reposts and putting likes, users are engaged in advertising the project, for which the owners, among other things, do not need to pay.
- Popularization of cryptocurrencies - in the case of an airdrop when creating a fork of an existing coin, the creators can draw attention to their project due to the fame and fame of the coin on the basis of which the fork is created.
- Creating a network of nodes - at the very beginning of their journey, coins have to go a long way before a network of nodes is formed that will verify transactions and create blocks. Airdrop can attract crypto enthusiasts who are interested in the technology of the coin and want to participate in the development of its network.
- Formation of the customer base - when participating in the distribution of free coins, users must fill out a form in which they need to specify personal information (such as, for example, e-mail). In the future, this information can be used by the company to send promotional materials and attract attention to the products produced.
- Return of "old" users - sometimes companies conduct "unscheduled" token distributions in order to thank active participants or return those who have lost interest in a particular cryptocurrency.

Airdrop and Bounty - similarities and differences
Airdrop is often confused with bounty, but in fact, these are different events. The main differences are as follows:
- Participation in airdrop is available to a larger number of users - to take part in a stimulating airdrop, you do not need to have certain skills, you just need to be able to use basic functions (understand how social networks work, what are likes, reposts, etc.). If we talk about automatic airdrops, then there is no need to perform actions at all, you just need to apply for participation. Bounty is available only to users who have certain professional skills and abilities, since to participate you will need to complete certain tasks related to Internet marketing, design, translation, etc.
- Bounty offers a greater reward - free tokens are proportional to the effort and time spent - if participation in airdrop does not require a lot of time, then you will have to spend it in bounty. However, the remuneration will be appropriate. Users of thematic forums have found that bounty programs offer rewards that are about 10-20 times higher than the number of tokens that can be earned in airdrop.
Where to get information about current airdrops
Announcements of upcoming airdrops are distributed in similar ways as ICO:
- At a well-known crypto forum bitcointalk.org . The organizers create a separate topic with the announcement of the airdrop and a link to it.
- In the Telegram messenger and social networks Facebook and Twitter. Usually, each blockchain project has its own channel in a well-known messenger, on which all the news is published. Also, sometimes an event is created on Facebook and an announcement on Twitter.
- On specialized sites. There is a special service dedicated to announcements of upcoming airdrops - airdropalert.com .
- Thematic sites dedicated to cryptocurrencies and blockchain, crypto calendars.
Usually, the announcement of the upcoming airdrop appears a couple of weeks before the start and is actively updated a couple of days before the event itself.

What you need to participate
To regularly participate in the giveaways of free tokens, you need to stock up on certain "tools":
Ethereum Storage Wallet
Why is it for the ether? The fact is that most of the projects are developed on the Ethereum blockchain, so to transfer tokens you will need a wallet suitable for storing ERC20 tokens. If you are a beginner and so far only want to try to participate in an interesting airdrop, you can start an online wallet MyEtherWallet (paired with the Meta Mask plugin, which will provide additional asset protection). Account registration is free and will not take much time.
Attention! Never use a private key or password to log in to your account, as this is not secure. Instead, log in to your account through the Meta Mask app.
If you decide to participate in airdrops on a permanent basis, we recommend that you buy a hardware wallet in the future, for example, brands such as Trezor or Ledger.
You also need to pay attention that the wallet must be active, i.e. there must be at least a minimum number of coins on the balance, and outgoing transactions must also be carried out. The organizers of airdrops sometimes check the wallets of users who have applied for participation. And if it turns out that an account on MEW was created simply to receive free cryptocurrency, then such a participant may be blacklisted.
Telegram account
We have already said that Telegram is one of the main channels for promoting ICO, so companies use their official channel to create an announcement of the upcoming airdrop. To receive tokens, you usually need to become a member of the channel, which in no case can be left until the airdrop is completed.

Live feed on Twitter
The popular news network is also one of the main channels for promoting blockchain projects, so to participate in airdrops, companies often require you to subscribe to the channel, like, and repost. Entries cannot be deleted until the end of the event and the tokens are credited to the account.
Participants in the distribution of free tokens must fill out a registration form, in which they often need to specify their email address. Thus, blockchain companies form the client base of their project. However, you can not specify your current email address, but create a new email specifically for participation in airdrop.
Crediting free coins
In fact, the scheme for getting free coins is very simple: you perform the tasks described in the conditions and get honestly deserved coins for it. As a rule, after the airdrop is completed, you still need to wait one or two months for the coins to enter the account.
To see if the tokens have been credited to your account, it is not necessary to log in to MyEtherWallet every time, especially since there is a special tool for this - https://etherscan.io. To see the balance, you just need to enter the address (public key) of your wallet in the search bar. You will see the credited tokens in the drop-down window, as shown in the picture below:
Participation in airdrop: safety rules
Airdrop is a new type of earnings that attracts a lot of scammers and scammers, because today most ICOs that conduct free coin giveaways are scam. Therefore, when taking part in airdrops, you should not forget about the safety rules:
- Do not send personal data - if the conditions indicate that you need to fill out a form with personal information, such as a private key, credit card number or passport data, then this is 100% scam.
- Do not send fiat or cryptocurrency - a real airdrop is free. Scammers often ask to send ETH to the specified address in order to allegedly verify the relevance of the wallet. Don't be fooled by this deception!
- Do not download any programs to your computer - all the actions described in the terms of participation involve working online (likes, reposts, adding to a group). Sometimes scammers ask to install software that is viral and, as a rule, is used to steal user's personal information (for example, passwords and wallet keys) or to launch hidden mining programs.
- Check the official sources - if the airdrop is really planned, information about it will definitely appear on the official ICO channels. If third-party sites write about the distribution of coins, but there is no information on the official website or Telegram channel of the project, it is better to refuse to participate.

What to do with the received coins
What to do with the credited coins? Is it worth selling them right away or is it better to wait for the coin to give decent "x"? There are three answers to this question:
- Sell - I must say that it will not be possible to sell coins right away, no matter how much I would like it. If the project has successfully completed the ICO and presented at least some product - this is already a good sign. After that, you need the coins to be added to popular exchanges. Usually, immediately after listing on well-known exchanges, the cryptocurrency shows good growth - this is the most successful moment to get the minimum (well, or as lucky) profit.
- Exchange - after the sale of the coin, you can not withdraw fiat, but buy a promising cryptocurrency with it, in the future of which you are sure.
- Storing is the riskiest step, which, however, can give the biggest income (if the project is successful) - it is to leave the coin for a "long-term". If you have made this decision, then we recommend that you store cryptocurrency on a wallet, and not on an exchange.
Pros and cons
Airdrop attracts newcomers with simple terms of participation and the opportunity to get cryptocurrency for free. However, is everything as rosy as it seems? Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of this cryptocurrency earnings.
Pros:
- The opportunity to get free coins - if all these conditions are met, you are guaranteed to receive the promised tokens. If the project is not a scam, then, judging by user reviews, after a successful listing for coins received in one airdrop, you can earn $50 - 100, and in the case of "hype" or very promising cryptocurrencies - all $300.
- Ease of participation - unlike bounty, where participants must have certain professional skills, airdrop can be attended by an ordinary user who has basic concepts of working with social networks and messengers.
- Small time costs - to fulfill the conditions of participation in one airdrop, it will take up to half an hour of time, while you do not need to perform active "brain activity".
Cons:
- Participation in a variety of airdrops — if you want to make decent money, then you should not hope that one airdrop will allow you to earn on lambo. Moreover, as already mentioned, about 90% of ICOs are nothing but a scam. Therefore, if you are determined to make money on this "topic", be patient and be ready to participate in at least dozens of airdrops.
- Work on the "promotion" of accounts in social networks - the ICO organizers are interested in distributing coins to users who have promoted accounts on Facebook and Twitter, so the number of accrued tokens directly depends on this indicator. You also need to be an active user of the thematic forum bitcointalk.org.
To participate or not
Is the game worth the candle? You can participate in the distribution of free tokens only if you are an active user of social networks and you have a lot of subscribers. It is at least impractical to create accounts specifically and invest a lot of time and effort to develop accounts. You also need to correlate the time spent and the benefits received. If you have a lot of time, then, of course, by taking part in airdrops, you will be able to earn some money, and perhaps even good ones if you come across a serious project.
Separately, it is worth mentioning about automatic airdrops. If you found out about the upcoming distribution, but you do not have the required coins, but you should not run to buy. The fact is that after the announcement of the automatic airdrop, as a rule, the price of the coin rises greatly. As a result, you can not only not earn, but also go into negative territory, since it is unknown how the new coin created as a result of the fork will show itself in the future.
In any case, before participating, we strongly recommend that you study the project and conditions, as well as weigh your chances of decent earnings.
